Sulzer
Orthopedic of Austin, Texas, recently recalled thousands of defective
hip implant parts it had manufactured. The problem was that the
socket portion of the hip implant had an oily residue that prevented
it from adhering to the patients hipbone. Sulzer has since admitted
that their manufacturing process had left mineral oil on the surface
of some of their hip implant parts. Because of that, the implant
did not bond properly with the patients bone. To date there have
been 1000 surgical replacements of the defective parts. Sulzer
has issued a recall and notified the FDA.
